The Tamil Nadu circle executive committee of All India Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited Officers’ Association has urged the Central government to desist from any disinvestment in the BSNL in order to protect the interest of the consumers.

A resolution adopted at a meeting held here on Saturday, said that a proposal on disinvestment in the BSNL had been on the agenda for some years but remained suspended as the financial status of the BSNL was in critical. But, with the financial position improving, NitiAyog, the Planning Commission had revived a proposal for disinvestment.

The resolution categorically said that it was because of the presence of BSNL that the consumers were enjoying telecommunication services at a less tariff. “The tariff of the BSNL for voice and data services are comparatively less. Due to this fierce competition, private companies are unable to hike the tariff according to their whims and fancies,” the resolution said.

M. S. Radhakrishnan, circle secretary, in his address, said that the employees and officials should stand up to the expectation of the customers taking into consideration the support from customers for its services. “The 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. night unlimited free calling to any network and incoming free roaming in mobile services have brought about marked changes in the BSNL services,” he said. K. Rajasekaran, All India president, S. Jeyachandran All India vice-president and S. Kamaraj, district secretary, spoke.
