The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has almost completed construction of the bypass linking Asoor along the Tiruchi-Thanjavur highway with Mathur along the Pudukottai highway.
Only a bridge work remains, but a temporary road has been laid close by for smooth passage of vehicles. So far, people from Thuvakudi area had to come in a circumlocutory route via Palpannai, TVS Toll Gate, and Airport to reach Mathur. The stretch is part of the proposed ring road that would link Mathur with Panjapur on the Madurai Highway and Panjapur with Jeeyapuram along the Karur Highway. The work slated for completion by May 2013 got delayed in between as the State government restrained the NHAI from continuing with the work citing water bodies. It was resumed after the High Court stayed the order.
The bypass road, enabling faster movement of materials between BHEL and ancillary industries at Mathur, would serve as a boon to the fabrication sector. Several vendor units were located in the SIDCO industrial estate in Mathur.
The road would considerably ease traffic congestion in the city.
