Art lovers can delight in the multi-coloured hues and varied themes of paintings displayed at the art exhibition-cum-sale at Leader’s Choice Art Gallery at Ram Nagar in Thillai Nagar in the city.
The exhibition features works of Eugene D’Vaz, V.Gokula, A.Sivakaumar, R.Muthuselvan, and Hermon Carduz. It was inaugurated by G. Balakrishnan, former vice principal, St. Joseph’s College on Saturday, and the expo is open from 10 a.m. to 9 a.m. till December 7.
While the works of Mr. Eugene, a retired professor of English from St. Joseph’s College, are based on abstract themes, Mr. Gokula, an associate professor of zoology at National College, relives his passion for wildlife through his paintings. Mr. Sivakumar has embraced painting as a full-time profession and prefers to use realism as a theme. Muthuselvan is an arts teacher at SRV Matriculation School, who uses nature themes in his paintings. Hermon Carduz is a soft skills coach and an artist whose focus is inspirational themes.
S. Tirunavukkarasu, additional commissioner of customs, who visited the exhibition, could be found immersed in the world of art as he closely observed the paintings and enjoyed interpreting abstract themes.
“The bright paintings have been created with different techniques using a variety of colours, strokes, and shading. We believe that each person can find something that appeals to him/her at the exhibition. In addition, the presence of the artist and the explanation about the theme of each painting is an added advantage that helps us appreciate the paintings better,” he says.
“We want to create awareness of the speciality of abstract art and surrealism among people because these works involve a complex thought process. The thought process that goes behind a painting is what ultimately matters. Unfortunately, people are yet to appreciate such paintings and prefer to stick to realism which they can easily understand and relate to. But the truth is that realism as a theme holds no value in the international art market,” says Hemon Carduz, proprietor, Leader’s Choice Art Gallery.
