Southern Railway has introduced app-based cab services at the Srirangam railway station.

It is the third station in Tiruchi Division, after Tiruchi Junction and Thanjavur Junction, to be provided with the passenger-related facility.

The app-based cab services was introduced a few days ago at Srirangam, which is a prominent station in Tiruchi Railway Division attracting pilgrims from various places across the country. The facility has paved the way for travellers alighting at the temple town to book cabs using their smart phones with the private operator Ola.

Unlike Tiruchi and Thanjavur, which are categorised as ‘A’ class stations, Srirangam falls under the ‘D’ category. Nevertheless, the station was chosen for introduction of the facility keeping in mind the large movement of devotees, said a senior railway official.

An exclusive space in the station’s circulating area has been earmarked for the facility for parking of cars and autos. The fares would be comparatively cheaper for passengers using the app-based cab service, the official added.

Passenger movement at the station is heavy only during certain times when long distance trains such as the Rockfort, Mangalore, Pallavan and Guruvayur Express trains halt at Srirangam. The official said passengers had begun to make use of the app-based cab services through their smart phones since the launch of the facility. Plans are afloot to introduce the facility at Puducherry, which too falls within the Tiruchi Railway Division.
