They urged the government to regularise the services of anganwadi workers and assistants

A group of anganwadi workers observed fast in Tiruchi on Monday in support of their charter of demands. The fast near Khadi Kraft was called by Tamil Nadu Government Anganwadi Employees Association.

The fasting members urged the State government to appoint additional workers and assistants at anganwadi centres keeping in mind their work load.

They also urged the government to regularise the services of anganwadi workers and assistants, and provide them job security besides announcing them as full-time government servants and providing them with all benefits.

Raise in gratuity at the time of retirement from the existing amount of Rs.50,000 to Rs.2 lakhs for anganwadi workers; increase in gratuity for anganwadi assistants from Rs.20,000 to Rs. 1 lakh; hike in the pension for both; ensuring quality in the construction of anganwadi centres with provision of basic facilities such as drinking water, toilet and electricity in them; and filling up of vacant posts through interview were among the demands.

The day-long fast was led by association State president M.Karuthamuthu. The fast was inaugurated by association state advisory committee president S.Srimathi.
