Several passenger coaches that came for periodical overhaul (POH) at the Golden Rock Railway Workshop here have been fitted with bio-toilets as a green initiative of the railway administration.
Similarly, many coaches that were attended to at the Broad Gauge Coaching Complex here under the control of Tiruchi Railway Division have been fitted with bio-toilets during the course of the last financial year. The environment-friendly bio-toilets were fitted based on a direction from Railway Board.
Railway sources told The Hindu that 252 bio-toilets were fitted in around 60 passenger coaches in Tiruchi alone in 2015-16 fiscal. As many as 110 of them were installed in passenger coaches when they came for POH at Golden Rock workshop.
The sources said technical personnel of Golden Rock Railway Workshop were deputed to assist Tiruchi Division in fitting bio-toilets in coaches at Broad Gauge Coaching Complex here. The bio-toilets had been fitted in some air-conditioned coaches, says a senior railway official.
Provision of bio-toilets would not only prevent open discharge of human faecal matter on the railway track but also eliminate the ordeal of removing such waste manually.
