The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) has decided to put on hold its decision to terminate the services of contract workers above the age of 58 in the company’s housekeeping department.
Official noteAn official communication from the company to The Hindu on Tuesday said that “it is clarified that the decision to terminate [the services of] some contract workers who are found over-aged was taken based on the interpretation of the amendment scheme notified by the EPF Organisation. However, the subject will be further examined before taking a final decision. Till such time, the termination orders will be kept in abeyance.”
On Monday, The Hindu had reported about the termination of services of the contract employees without any prior notice.
The workers, each of them having decades of service in the organisation, received the employment termination letters on Saturday.
ProtestThe workers sat in protest in front of the BSNL office at Statue under the banner of the BSNL Casual Labourers Union, demanding that they be reinstated.
Though only the services of contract workers in the housekeeping department were terminated by the BSNL, workers from other key departments of the company, including those who handle cabling work, were apprehensive that the axe will fall on them next.
