The Vizhinjam police arrested a 25-year-old man on Friday in connection with the alleged suicide of a woman a few days ago.

Anoop Rajendran, a native of Cicilypuram, was apprehended for his alleged involvement in the death of Asha Chandran, who was found hanging in her house in Kottukal on Tuesday.

A note, purportedly written by her, which had been recovered from her room, had allegations of sexual harassment against Anoop, who has been absconding for long.

Irate relatives had carried her body to the house of the accused, only to find that the family had fled after learning about the incident. They blocked the road and dispersed only after the police promised them of a thorough probe into the incident.

S. Nuooman, Circle Inspector, Vizhinjam police, said the accused allegedly had an affair with the victim for several years. She apparently took the extreme step after he ended the relationship.

The police have booked the accused under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 376 (rape) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.

He was apprehended from Pallichal after his whereabouts were traced with the assistance of the Cyber Cell. He allegedly travelled to various places, including Thrissur, to evade arrest.

He will be produced in a local court on Saturday, the official said.

The police have also registered a case against Anoop’s mother for abetting suicide.

Dead woman’s relatives had blocked the road seeking thorough probe.
