Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) is joining hands with the National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) to open a new Comprehensive Care Centre for Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

The proposed centre will focus on the diagnosis, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of children with autism spectrum disorders and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Multidisciplinary services will be offered by a dedicated team, which includes a neurologist, speech and language pathologist, psychologist, occupational therapist, and physiotherapist.

The establishment of the centre assumes great importance considering the fact that autism spectrum disorders have been on the rise world over and that in India, approximately one in 100 children are affected by autism.

A scientific committee has been constituted to provide inputs for the centre. Health Minister K.K. Shylaja is inaugurating the centre at a function to be held here on Tuesday.

On the occasion, Ms. Shylaja will also release a project report on ‘Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases in Kerala,’ a study conducted by Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies, the public health wing of SCTIMST, in collaboration with the State Health Services department.
