The National Commission for Scheduled Castes vice chairman L. Murugan on Wednesday visited the house of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) functionary Rajesh, who was murdered last week at Sreekaryam.

Accompanied by BJP leader V.V. Rajesh, Minority Morcha leaders, and others, he interacted with the family. The mother of the deceased told him that he had been facing threats to his life in recent days.

“My son has been friendly with everyone and never got involved with any violent activities. Still, they targeted him. There is some serious conspiracy behind this murder. It has to be investigated,” she said.

Rajesh’s brother Rajeev said that one person had threatened him at an autorickshaw stand last week. The family also handed over the names of three more persons, whom they suspect to have been involved in the murder.

The vice-chairman questioned the Scheduled Castes Development officer over the delay in the disbursal of compensation to the family. Later, he told press persons that ₹4.12 lakh in compensation had to be immediately released by the district administration. This was as per the amendments to the SC/ST(Prevention of Atrocities) Act, he said.

Request to Cabinet

“I am also requesting the State government to take a Cabinet decision to provide a compensation of ₹25 lakh to the family. There is precedence for such compensation as the State cabinet had recently awarded a similar compensation to the family of NCP State president Uzhavoor Vijayan who passed away recently. I have also asked the Principal Secretary of the SC/ST Development Department to provide land to the family and ensure the education of the two children. His wife also has to be given a pension of ₹5,000 per month,” he said.
