Industrialist Kochouseph Chittilappilly will sit on a 24-hour hunger strike at the LMS Compound grounds on February 20 in the State capital, demanding effective steps from the authorities to bring an end to the stray dog menace across the State.
The hunger strike, the third that he will be sitting on after those at Ernakulam and Kozhikode, will be from 12 noon on February 20 till noon the next day.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Chittillappilly said the hunger strike at Thiruvananthapuram would in fact be a protest against the lack of response from the government and authorities to the strikes he had staged at Ernakulam and Kozhikode. The demands that he would be raising through the hunger strike will protection of human life and property from stray dogs, amendments to the Animal Birth Control Rules 2001, compensation from the government and local governing bodies to those attacked by stray dogs and so on. The stir is being organised under the aegis of the Street Dog Free Movement, of which he is the chairman,
Stating that his movement had extended financial and legal assistance to several people who were victims of stray dog attacks, Mr. Chittilappilly said he was not staging the strike in front of the Secretariat to avoid traffic blocks. While the Federation of Residents’ Association Trivandrum (FRAT) would be part of the strike, other organisations including the Chamber of Commerce, Lawyers’ Union, Rotary Club, Lion’s Club, Merchants Union and traders unions too have declared solidarity with the event.
