The shifting of the Carmel Girls’ Higher Secondary School to the greener environs of Peyad this academic year seems to have reinvigorated its Bodhi Nature Club.
They started off this year’s activities with a two-day exhibition called ‘Tree Landmarks of Thiruvananthapuram’, with support from the city-based NGO Tree Walk.
The photographs exhibited here were mostly taken by renowned nature photographer Suresh Elamon and they featured many of the city’s rich arboreal wealth.
Carmel school’s high school students took up the task of displaying them tagging the photographs with the botanical and local names of trees and their location.
The chief audience for this exhibition were the youngest children of the school, going with the Bodhi Nature Club’s plans to involve children in kindergarten and primary classes in more environment-related initiatives.
Coordinator of the nature club Beena Antony said it was essential to build awareness of environment conservation from a very young age.
Guided tourMonday’s programme saw the little ones guided through a stunning array of pictures showing some easily identifiable trees that mark the city’s landscape along with a couple of hidden treasures as well. Tree Walk’s coordinator S. Anitha was also present.
This event would be followed by a Nature Fest, which might be held in October, which would involve drawing competitions and quizzes on the environment. The school’s relocation to a more rural locale would see the students being taken out for walks around the campus more often.
The school also planned to get the children to interact with local people in the neighbourhood on ecology.
