Freedom fighter and Gandhian K.E. Mammen chose to celebrate his 95{+t}{+h}birthday on Friday by enlivening memories of the struggle to gain independence for the country from the British.

There was a steady flow of well-wishers from various walks of life who arrived at the NIMS Hospital, Neyyattinkara, where the nonagenarian has been undergoing treatment for age-related ailments.

Those who called on him on the day included Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, his wife Mariamma Oommen, Speaker N. Sakthan, Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar, former Speaker M. Vijayakumar, and CPI leader Pannian Ravindran. Mr. Chandy and his wife sat in rapt attention when Mr. Mammen spoke of his interactions with Mahatma Gandhi.
