A fortnight without water

KWA hasn’t regulated valve for days

Around 1,500 residents of Kunninmukal, Peyad, have been doing without supply of potable water for the past two weeks.

Water supply was disrupted when the motor at the pump house at Mangattukadavu caught fire recently. Repair works, although undertaken much later, were not effective as the motor caught fire again after pumping was restarted.

Motor replaced

The damaged motor was replaced with a temporary one borrowed from the Aruvikkara pumping house on Tuesday and pumping was restarted.

But, Kunninmukal is yet to receive water.

Although the small water tank there has been filled, the water from here will become available to people at Kunninmukal only if the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) employees adjust a valve near Jawahar School at Chirakkonam road, said V.P. Pramod Kumar, a resident. While the valve is usually regulated a few times a week, this has not been done for the past few days, aggravating the water crisis.

Usually, the 300-odd families residing there receive water supply at least three days a week.

Now, they have to go to other houses one or 2 km away to meet their daily needs, he said.

The residents have sought the intervention of the Minister for Water Resources and other top officials to resolve the issue.
