A total of 14,741 projects were approved by the district panchayat committee here on Friday for implementation under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in the year 2010-11.
These include 9,526 projects to be implemented in grama panchayats, 3,203 projects in block panchayats and 2,012 projects in the district panchayat.
An official statement issued here on Friday said the district panchayat implemented projects costing Rs. 4,818.49 lakh under the MGNREGS scheme in 2009-10.
As many as 1.14 lakh families in the district benefitted from the scheme. A total of 32,87,576 work-days were created under the MGNREGS last year while 1,550 families were provided 100 work-days.
The district panchayat committee has also decided to honour Vilappil, Chenkal and Kottukal panchayats, which disbursed more than Rs.2 crore under the scheme last year.
Two major projects taken up under the employment guarantee scheme in the previous year were de-silting of the Aruvikkara Dam and works undertaken on the District Agriculture Farm at Peringamala.
This year, the district panchayat plans to start nurseries for saplings in three blocks under the MGNREGS. A scheme to plant fruit-bearing saplings inside the compounds of block offices has also been initiated, the statement added.
