Water from two hydel projects released: MCC Commissioner

Water-level at Thumbe vented dam which supplies drinking water to the city has dipped by three inches from 8.11 ft. at 6 a.m. on Tuesday to 8.8 ft. at 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation Harish Kumar K. water from two hydel power projects were released to the Netravathi on Wednesday.

The maximum storage level at the dam stood at 13 ft. The dead storage level stood at three ft.

Mr. Kumar told The Hindu that water stored at two hydel power project dams built across the tributaries of Netravathi at Kempuhole and Hosamatha were released on Wednesday.

When it flows to Thumbe dam water level at Thumbe was expected to go up by one foot. It was enough for 15 day supply.

It was expected to be over by Saturday. The corporation expected two MGD (million gallons a day) from Lakhya dam.

Water from Lakhya dam would be treated at Panambur treatment plant and supplied to Mangalore North areas. Water from Thumbe would be supplied to Mangalore South areas.

He said that as the catchment area of the Netravathi had received rain the past a few days. Hence Mr. Kumar requested the farmers along the banks of the river not to lift water for irrigation purpose.
