The district's reception committee members were a relieved lot when the heavy rain that was occurring in the Gudia region suddenly stopped at around 12.15 p.m. to welcome the Queen's Baton Relay convoy there.

“We were apprehensive that all our preparations may come to nought because of the rain. But we witnessed a miracle,” said District Information Officer K. Rohini as there was bright sunshine in the area when the Baton arrived.

A member said, . “It is green everywhere. It is very beautiful. Mangalore, we love you.” Wing Commander V.N. Singh, leader of the team carrying the Queen's Baton, said, “At several spots along the way, people have put up banners welcoming us to Dakshina Kannada. It is wonderful.”

Recipients of Arjuna Award Vandana Rao, Manjari Bhargava, Shobha Narayana and young sprinting talent Vandana Shanbhag were among those who relayed the Baton here.

The team of Commonwealth Games' officials and volunteers was treated to a colourful programme showcasing the various cultural ethos of the district.
