Public property under the jurisdiction of 56 gram panchayats in Mangaluru taluk will be mapped on a pilot basis using satellite image.

A joint initiative of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat and Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology, Moodbidri, was launched here on Wednesday.

According to M.R. Ravi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the panchayat, it was the first such initiative in any zilla panchayat in the State.

Property thus documented under the Bhuvan Panchayat Project would be made available on Bhuvan portal.

The Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology (AIET) would map property such as bridges, roads, anganwadi centres, schools, post offices and ATMs with the help of National Remote Sensing Centre, under ISRO. In all, 271 such public property have been listed.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative, Mr. Ravi said that though the deadline for the project was three months, efforts would be made to complete it in a month because once it starts raining, it would be difficult to conduct the mapping.

Once the mapping was done, it would become the profile of public property under a particular gram panchayat.

It would help the panchayat and the government in planning future projects, manage the resources aptly, and ensure protection of such property.

Vivek Alva, managing trustee of Alva’s Education Foundation, said that each panchayat would be covered by five engineering students each under the project.
