Moderate to heavy rains lashed many parts of Dakshina Kannada on Sunday. According to sources, no major damage to property or loss of life was reported till late evening.
Srinkant Rao, Joint Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation, told The Hindu that he received a call from Jeppinamogaru councillor Nagendra stating that water had entered three houses in this area. “Our engineers have visited the spot,” he said. Guruprasad and Praveen, residents of Jeppinamogaru, told The Hindu that five houses near Aadimaye Temple were surrounded with water on Sunday morning. There was knee-deep water near the temple, he said.
Mr. Praveen said that local youth had to dig out a trench to drain the water. They said the Mangalore City Corporation officials and local councillor did not come to their help. “We pooled in money, hired workers, and an earthmover to dig out a trench for draining water,” he said. There was no proper drain on Jeppinamogaru main road, he added.
Mr. Guruprasad said that some people in the nearby sites had dumped debris in heaps.
It was blocking the natural flow of water. They said that sewage water had mixed with rainwater. They were apprehensive that the water might enter their homes if rains continued for some more time.
A city corporation official said that a tree fell in Attavar.
Rainfall
Bantwal recorded 68.4 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Sunday. Sullia recorded 57.88 mm, Uppinangady 52.4 mm, Puttur 52 mm, and Belthangady 45.2 mm during the same period.
India Meteorological Department said: “Heavy to very heavy rain would occur at isolated places over coastal Karnataka in the next 48 hours.”
