Meeting to discuss use of desalinated water for industries

Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim has called representatives of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited, Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilisers and other major industries for a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the use of desalinised water for industries.

Talking to presspersons here on Tuesday, he said that the need of water for industries, which were an important part of the country’s economy, would have to be met. He said that stoppage of supply of water to industries in the last few days had affected their working. He said that the stoppage of production of urea by MCF would impact farmers in the hinterland, who need urea for sowing. Mr. Ibrahim said that he was working on having a good water policy for the region that would include the use of desalinised water. The Deputy Commissioner said that he had seen the project of desalination of sea water at the National Institute of Technology, Surthakal, and had sought transfer of the technology. Mr. Ibrahim said that a consortium of industries could set up a desalination plant at a cost of Rs. 100 crore. Desalinised water could be available at Rs. 82 for one kg litre.
