Amid abduction and gang-rape of a medical student by three persons recently, a district administration meeting here on Wednesday discussed various measures to enhance security in the Manipal University campus.
It was decided to have traffic monitoring points at 10 places on the public roads running through the campus. The university would set up check posts and install boom barriers at these spots.
The press release issued on Thursday said the meeting was chaired by the Deputy Commissioner M.T. Reju. Government officials, authorities of the Manipal University, members of Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC), representatives of autorickshaw unions and other voluntary organisations participated in this meeting.
Mr. Reju directed the authorities of Manipal University to install Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at the 10 points where the public roads passed through the university, as well as at other vital exposed places in the campus.
Both the Udupi City Municipal Council and the university would install bright street lamps on roads and dark areas in the campus.
The district police and the Regional Transport Office would work together to provide unique numbers to the 13,369 autorickshaws in Udupi district.
The university authorities agreed to provide a security vehicle for students to go to their hostels and homes after 10 p.m. from the university library. The campus patrol vehicles and police patrols had been directed to do patrol the university campus regularly during the nights.
Mr. Reju directed the officials of the Excise Department to issue instructions to all bars and restaurants functioning in Manipal to close down at their scheduled time.
The issue of starting a helpline for the students and the public was also discussed at the meeting.
