DSS misconstrued my statement: Pejawar seer

June 20, 2011 01:04 pm | Updated 01:04 pm IST - Udupi:

Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math has said that the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) had staged a protest on June 13 misconstruing his statement on the conversion of Dalits into Buddhism.

In a press release, swamiji said on Saturday, that every person could embrace any religion of his choice. Dalits had the right to embrace Buddhism.

He would not question this right, but every citizen also had the freedom to give his suggestion. He had given his suggestion to Dalit people to stay with Hinduism.

What was wrong in giving “Bhakti Deekshe” to them? This programme of “Bhakti Deekshe” would help eradicate untouchability, the seer said. Except for a Dalit group with Leftist orientation, the common people of Dalit community had welcomed his programme.

He had never said that caste was the soul of Hinduism. It was difficult to eradicate caste system in the present political and social situation.
