Many final year students of government degree colleges faced interviews conducted by various companies at the Government First Grade College at Car Street here on Wednesday.
It was at the udyog mela organised by the Department of Collegiate Education exclusively for government degree college students in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu districts.
Principal of the college Radhakrishna K. quoting information given by the Department of Collegiate Education told The Hindu that 978 students enrolled at the mela attended by 42 companies. Of them, the companies short-listed 670. The companies were from information technology, automobile, insurance, marketing and local retail sectors.
An interviewer of a company told The Hindu that most of the candidates were not fluent in speaking English. Otherwise, they appeared confident, he said.
Some students said that they preferred job first and pursuing PG next.
Pranupa M.G., a B.Com. student, said that she preferred studying M.Com. through correspondence mode and would take up the job offer first if selected.
She said that even if she completed M.Com. and opted for job later, companies would ask for experience. Hence, she thought it was better to take up the job first and simultaneously study PG in correspondence mode. She said that she attended an interview conducted by a private bank at the venue.
A girl who studied B.Sc. at the host college said she would complete her PG first and would apply for job later. The girl said that she attended the interview on Wednesday to gain confidence and get an experience on how to face interviews.
Prahllad, a BBM student from the Government Degree College at Kavoor, said that he appeared for an interview to the position of a sales development manager. He was particular about his choice as he said that he would not take up the job offer if the company asked him to do marketing or work as a BPO agent.
Harish, a B.A. student, said that as he was not fluent in communicative English he did not do well in the interview conducted by a BPO company.
N. Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, who inaugurated the mela, asked students to work honestly if got appointed. He asked them to face interviews confidently.
