A section of the students of Yadava College in the city blocked the New Natham Road on Monday accusing the authorities of serving “poor quality” food in a mess attached to the hostel.
According to the protestors, they were paying Rs.11,600 a year as hostel fee apart from the monthly mess bill of Rs.1,800.
Despite collecting such “huge” amount, the college had dumped around seven to eight students in every room in the hostel and had been serving tasteless food items on a monotonous menu.
The students decided to give up their protest only after Revenue Divisional Officer Arumuga Nainar visited the spot and promised them that he would initiate action. The college was being administered directly by the Collegiate Education Department ever since a dispute erupted among management committee members in 2012.
