A group of visually challenged people petitioned Madurai Collector’s office on Wednesday alleging inaction by the police against those, who torched a few shacks they had set up at the government allotted land at K. Pudupatti near Thenpalanji here.

They said that at least six shacks were torched in two incidents in a month.

“We reported both the incidents to the Austinpatti police. However, they neither registered a case nor took any action,” alleged P. Kumar, president, Visually challenged Rehabilitation and Welfare Association. He said that around 60 visually challenged persons were allotted land in K. Pudupatti.

“We wanted financial aid to construct houses. Officials said that the aid can be arranged if there are temporary shelters with electricity and water connection. So, we erected these shacks,” he said adding that they were not residing in these shacks.

“We have a few suspects from nearby areas who do not like us moving to the locality. We reported their names to the police. However, no action has been taken,” she said.
