Demanding regular and adequate supply of drinking water, a group of women from Burkitmanagar near Palayamkottai submitted a petition during the weekly grievance day meet held at the Collectorate on Monday with empty pots.

The petitioners from Burkitmanagar said erratic drinking water supply had been haunting the residents for the past two months as the local body had failed to ensure adequate supply of drinking water to the residents in the domestic drinking water connections and also in the public taps. Though repeated complaints had been made with the village panchayat administration, no step had been taken to alleviate the residents’ problem, they said.

“Since some of the residents fitted motor in the domestic drinking water connections, supply to other places has become erratic and inadequate. Even after specific complaints had been made against those offenders, no action has been taken against the violators,” the petitioners complained.

“Raise height”

Led by Rev. Fr. Antony A. Cruz, members of Mother Teresa Trust and Sattapanchayat Movement submitted a petition, urging the Tangedco officials to raise the height of the switches fitted in the street light poles beyond the children’s reach. The petitioners said the switches fitted in the street light poles in most of the areas were posing a serious threat to innocent children as no proper boxes had been provided to cover the switches.

Hence, the Tangedco should take immediate action to raise the height of the switches fitted in the electric poles and avert impending tragedies.

Book expo sought

On behalf of the Tirunelveli District Book Readers’ Association, A. Peter and a few others submitted a petition urging the district administration to take initiatives for organising books exhibition as it was conducted in the previous years at VOC Grounds, Palayamkottai.

Since the book fair attracted a few thousand students from various parts of southern districts as they could buy all books required for their studies under one roof, book fair should be organised during this year, they appealed.
