Sri Subramaniaswamy Temple at Tirupparankundram has got a new entrant in the form of a seven-year-old elephant. The female elephant brought from Assam got a warm reception from temple authorities who performed a special puja to it.
Avvaiyar, the female elephant that had served the temple for nearly five decades, died around two years ago due to ailments associated with old age.
The new elephant would be named on Monday. At present, three other major temples in the district have got elephants.
Fifty-year-old Madhuravalli is the temple elephant of Sri Koodal Azhagar Perumal Temple and Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is home to 16-year-old Parvathy. Lord Kallazhagar Temple in Alagarkoil has its own elephant, seven-year-old Sundaravalli.
