A massive demonstration was organised by The Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Mother Teresa and Alagappa University Teachers’ Association (MUTA) here on Saturday pressing for various demands of college teachers and students.
MUTA held a protest at RMS Road, near Periyar Bus Stand, urging the State Government to look in to the welfare of teaching staff of self-financing colleges/courses without delay.
Members demanded that the Government must take steps for job-security and service security of teachers working in self-financing colleges and for those who handle self-financing courses in aided colleges. The protest which was led by senior member S. Vivekanandan condemned the manner in which managements of private colleges have been treating the faculty by paying a meagre salary.
“Every management pays as they like. Teachers must have security of their service and they must be paid high salary,” the association demanded.
Another appeal by MUTA was that the students of self-financing colleges should not be discriminated by the State Government and that they too should be provided with laptops, bus pass and scholarships.
It also urged for abolishing the new pension scheme and asked the Government to continue with the old scheme with regard to employees’ pension. The members of MUTA demanded that the Career Advancement Scheme for teaching faculty should not be affected in any way.
They wanted the self-appraisal scheme to be followed immediately for those who joined in service after 2006 so that their promotions will not get delayed.
Murali, zone-1 president, N. Thenpandian, zone-2 president, Senthamaraikannan and S. Kalyanaraman, secretaries of two zones, were among those who took part.
