S. Mareeswari (28) of Old Vilangudi here is reported to have attempted suicide by hanging at her residence on Saturday allegedly due to harassment by usurers.

Police sources said that the condition of the woman, who was rushed to Government Rajaji Hospital in a critical condition, had shown slight improvement in the evening.

According to preliminary enquiries conducted by the police with neighbours and the woman’s husband, who worked as a mason, Ms. Mareeswari had borrowed money at exorbitant interest to manage family expenses.

On Friday night and Saturday morning, two women usurers allegedly visited her house and scolded her for delay in payment of interest, police said.

Frustrated, she attempted suicide after her husband left for work in the morning. Her children, however, alerted the neighbours and with their help she was rushed to the hospital, police sources added.

A senior official from Koodalpudur police station said that a complaint had been received from the woman’s husband. Stating that an enquiry was in progress, the official said that a case was yet to be registered.
