A Special Sub-Inspector of Police, Narayan, attached to the District Crime Branch, was placed under suspension on the charges of connivance in sand smuggling and threatening officials.

The Superintendent of Police, M. Rajarajan, on Friday ordered his suspension following complaints against Narayan that he had been threatening officials in the Department of Mines.

“He had been threatening officials claiming to be SB-CID police official and seeking to smuggle sand. He had also threatened a Mines officer for releasing trucks that had been caught on the charge of smuggling sand,” the SP said.

The SSI was also indirectly operating three trucks, owned by one of his relatives, for sand mining, the SP said.

After confirming that he was involved in illegal activities, the SP ordered his suspension.

The SP had already suspended two other police personnel — SSI Perumalsamy and head constable, Muthukumar, of Sattur Sub-division — for being hand in glove with a sand smuggler.
