In order to create awareness of the new Goods and Service Tax rates announced by the GST council, officials from the Central and State Goods and Service Tax and Central Excise departments performed skits at Vishaal De Mall here on Saturday.
The short plays were set in different domestic settings and catered to the new generation audience. The performances educated the consumers about GST levied on different products.
Deputy Commissioner of State GST M. Maheshwari said tthough GST was currently a buzzword, the concept elicited a lot of negative light on social media. “Many people are scared of the concept and it is highly misunderstood. The skit is an attempt to explain the new rates,” she said.
R. Karnan, president of Tamil Nadu Citizen Consumer Protection Centre, Madurai, said that the GST Council was still open to suggestions from the public regarding the reduction of rates. “The system is looking to moving towards better transparency. Any doubts can still be clarified,” he said.
