A campaign to encourage children to plant tree saplings was inaugurated at the office of the Superintendent of Police here on Monday as part of the ongoing summer camp organised by the Meenakshi Mission Hospital.

Inaugurating the campaign, Asra Garg, SP, said that such camps created social awareness and a sense of responsibility among the children.

They also developed in them essential qualities like tolerance and a will to share. The District Forest Officer, Rakeshkumar Jagenia, explained how sapling planting was essential from the point of view of economic development and environment protection. Trees helped in keeping the environment pollution-free and facilitated improved rainfall. Teachers, he said, should create an awareness of sapling planting at a young age as children had a vital role to play in planting and protecting trees.

Those who addressed the gathering included Ananthapadmanabhan, Chief Executive Officer, Meenakshi Mission Hospital.
