In a major catch in the recent past, the Madurai city police recovered 126 sovereigns of gold jewels, Rs 8 lakh in cash, a canon camera and silver articles and items weighing 2.5 kilograms and arrested two persons on Tuesday.

Following complaints of burglaries, Inspector General and Commissioner of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal had formed special teams.

After examining the modus operandi in as many as 20 crimes reported in Tallakulam, Koodal Pudur, Avaniapuram, South Gate, Thilagar Thidal and Vilakuthoon police stations, the special team zeroed-in on a few suspects.

Based on the confession of a history sheeter identified as Illangovan, son of Boothapandi, a resident of TNHB Colony, Anaiyur, the police recovered a sizeable portion of the stolen articles.

Also, it came to light that Illangovan and his accomplice Muthukumar (36), son of Duraikani of Avaniapuram Gurudev Nagar, had figured in the crimes.

In total, the police recovered the stolen articles from the duo and booked them.

The police said that the burglars watched a particular locality for at least 48 hours before committing the crime. They also gathered inputs about locked homes from persons, who had access to these houses, such as delivery boys from private courier companies, milk supplier, domestic help and others.

When the movement of residents in the locality was thin, the burglars indulged in the crime irrespective of whether it was day or night. Similarly, they ensured that there was not much disturbance at the scene of crime .

After watching the inmates of a particular house move away, the burglars gained entry, committed the crime and left the place in no time. Thus, the crime went unnoticed for long time or on some occasions even long number of days until the residents returned, a police officer said.
