Rain lashes Kanyakumari

Rain lashed various parts of Kanyakumari district on Thursday night resulting in flooding of many roads including WCC Road, Kottar, Vadaseri and Semmangudi roads in Nagercoil town.

A maximum of 238 mm rainfall was recorded in Eraniel. There was widespread rain in Anaikkidangu, Colachel, Kurunthancode, Adayamadai, Kottaram, Myladi, Surulode. As the catchment areas of major dams received good rainfall, there were floods in Thirparappu falls. Bathing in the falls was banned for the third day on Friday. The hilly areas near Balamore considered as catchment areas of dams received good rainfall. Due to this, the inflow into the dams was also on the rise.

Water entered many low-lying areas near Rajakkamangalam. Over 100 houses were inundated in Anna Nagar in Rajakkkamangalam. People moved to safer places. A big tree got uprooted in Keezha Vannanvilai and fell on overhead power cables. Employees of Tangedco rushed to the spot and restored power supply. As there was waterlogging in the salt pans in Samithoppu, Palkulam, Anjukiramam, salt production was affected. Similarly, work in brick kilns was also affected.

The water level in Pechiparai dam increased to 31.7 feet, with an inflow of 264 cft. The level of Perunchani Dam stood at 62.25 feet with an inflow of 305 cft. The water level in various dams (in feet) are: Chittar I 7.38, Chittar II 7.44, Poigai 18.10 and Mambazhathuraiyaru 47.90.

Rainfall recorded in various stations (in mm) are: Pechiparai 51.6, Perunchani 50, Chittar I 68.6, Chittar II 59.4, Poigai 18, Mambazhathuraiyaru 72, Eraniel 238, Anaikkidangu 63, Colachel 188.6, Kurunthancode 138.8, Kozhiporvilai 5, Mullanginavilai 82, Puthananai 49.4, Thirparappu 74.6, Nagercoil 78.8, Boothapandi 31.5, Surulode 67.6, Kannimar 35.2, Aralvoimozhi 18, Balamore 39.8, Myladi 56.4 and Kottar 77.5, sources in WRO of PWD department said.
