Members of Alaikudi Makkal Samooga Padukappu Sangam, human rights activists and leaders of political parties staged a protest here on Friday, wearing black clothes, in protest against the arrest and subsequent torture of G. Selvam of Peria Ulagani by the Perungudi police on January 25
The protesters, led by K. Ranganathan, president of the sangam, demanded action against the police personnel responsible for the arrest and payment of adequate compensation to the family of Selvam, an activist of the sangam. They alleged that the police were foisting cases against innocent nomadic communities and, in some cases, they were forced to confess to selling stolen jewels.
While calling for the creation of an exclusive welfare board for nomadic communities, they urged the police to withdraw all cases foisted on refugees.
