The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court was told on Friday that only those children who participated in competitions held as part of the MGR centenary celebrations would be taken to the event to be held in Theni district, assisted by their teachers, for their felicitation.

In counter affidavits filed on behalf of the Chief Secretary and DGP, the court was also informed that the function, which was scheduled for November 5, was now postponed to November 9.

A petition was filed in the court seeking a ban on school children attending the MGR centenary celebration in Theni. The petitioner pointed put that the principal seat in Chennai had passed an interim injunction on the State government and school education authorities against bringing school children to attend the MGR centenary public meetings.

The petitioner also claimed that with rains in Theni the children would have to suffer while travelling to the public meeting. The court had earlier directed the respondents to file counter petitions.

A division bench of Justices M. Venugopal and Abdul Quddhose dismissed the petition as withdrawn.
