Nearly one-fourth of the 25,02,602 voters in Madurai district are youngsters in the age group of 18-29 years, the final electoral rolls released on Friday ahead of the Assembly election on May 16 reveal. Of them, 92,231 voters are in the age group of 18 to 19 years, while another 5,19,145 voters are between 20 and 29 years of age.

The number of voters in the age group of 18 to 19 years has shot up by 18 per cent since the release of the draft rolls on January 20 this year when there were 78,099 voters in this group.

District Collector and Election Officer K. Veera Raghava Rao attributed this trend to the extensive Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) activities carried out, particularly on college campuses.

In total, 41,866 voters have been newly added in all age groups between January 20 and April 19, which was the cut-off date to apply for inclusion.

Despite the additions, the total number of voters, however, declined marginally since January 20 due to the removal of double entries and requests received for deletion.

District Election Office carried out an exercise to compare the records of deceased persons for the past 10 years available with the office of the Registrar for identifying the names to be removed.

About 50,000 entries were removed in total across all the ten constituencies, which included deletion requests for 25,642 voters.

Mr. Rao said that the district administration would ensure that voter slips were provided to all the eligible voters ahead of the election.
