In a bid to control crime and arrest criminals, a modern integrated control room, connected with a network of CCTV cameras, was inaugurated here on Tuesday.

With the launch of the new facility, police personnel would be able to constantly monitor images and video clippings captured through the CCTV cameras installed at various places in the city.

Superintendent of Police Ashwin M. Kotnis inaugurated the facility established at Thoothukudi South police station, in the presence of Assistant Superintendent of Police (Thoothukudi Town) S. Selvanagarathinam.

Later addressing media persons, the SP said this facility was established with the financial support of business houses under their corporate social responsibility activity.

Apart from the 30 CCTV cameras with analogue version functioning under Thoothukudi Town limits, 100 digital CCTV cameras had been installed at vital places covering bus stands, places of worship and crowded localities.

Four-mega-pixel rotation cameras with the option of zooming images had been installed. These latest cameras could store data for 15 days, he said.

Those in need of police assistance could dial ‘100’ . A call registry was being maintained, Mr. Kotnis said.

He said two incidents of chain snatching, that occurred under Thoothukudi North and Thoothukudi Central police station limits, were detected quickly with the aid of CCTV cameras last month. Five persons were arrested in connection with these crimes and 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery, a cell phone and ₹860 were recovered from them.

With the launch of the new facility, vehicles involved in hit and run cases could be tracked and accused nabbed quickly. These CCTV cameras would also prevent bike lifting crime.

Mr. Kotnis said traffic-related problems could be effectively monitored and remedial measures taken fast. These CCTV cameras would also help the police prevent antisocial elements from causing nuisance to the public during processions or public meetings, he said.
