With the objective of preparing Management students to weather the current economic storm by bringing about a paradigm shift in their thinking and skills, a regional level seminar was organised here on Friday.
Conducted by the Madurai Kamaraj University’s Department of Management Studies, the seminar was divided into two sessions: ‘Leadership – some successful Indian experiences’ and ‘Time Management’.
K. Thomas Varghese, additional vice-president (human resources and administration), Energy Infra Tech, New Delhi, who has nearly three decades of experience in this field, was the resource person for the seminar.
According to the seminar co-ordinator, C. Chandran, 150 management students from the university took part along with an equal number from seven affiliated colleges. Coming in the wake of the global slowdown, this seminar would immensely benefit the students.
Addressing the inaugural function, K.P.T. Ganesan, University Syndicate Member and Chairman of State Agricultural Marketing Committee, told the students that after becoming executives, they should have the ability to take their workforce along with them.
Team work is the order of the day and the key to success, he added. S. Subbiah, also a Syndicate Member, said that management students were always in demand.
He also released the Placement Brochure during the seminar. V. Alagappan, Head, Department of Commerce, also addressed the gathering.
Delivering his lecture, Mr. Thomas said that leadership was a vital quality and leaders were not born but made and created by their dedicated and meritorious work. A leader should be able to motivate, inspire, guide and make his followers passionate about a cause.
He pointed out that leadership could be used constructively as was done by the spiritual leader Buddha and freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi and also used for despicable purposes as was done by the German general Adolf Hitler and Pol Pot, the leader of the murderous Cambodian communist movement known as the ‘Khmer Rouge.’
