The annual Masi Kodai festival at Mondaikadu Bhagavathi Amman Temple near Colachel in Kanyakumari district began with the hoisting of the flag on Sunday.

This year the new flag post was commissioned before the festival. The cost of the flag post was borne by former Chief Minister O. Panneer Selvam.

Thousands of devotees from Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts and neighbouring Kerala witnessed the ceremony led by ‘tantri’ Edakkode Mahadeva Iyer and Mel Shanti Sattanatha gurukkal. The festival is the most important event at the temple.

TNSTC and KSRTC operated special buses to the temple from various destinations. Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Pon. Radhakrishnan was the chief guest. State BJP president Tamilisai Soundarrajan and MP A. Vijaya Kumar participated. The 10-day festival ends on March 7 with Odukku Puja.
