Employees of Madurai Corporation are up in arms against the zonal Chairperson (zone 2), K. Jeyavel, alleging that he took away few files from the Corporation office after threatening the women staff on Wednesday.

The employees, led by the president of Madurai Corporation Clerks’ Association, T. Mohammed Rafi, made a formal complaint with Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa, and the Corporation Commissioner, R. Nanthagopal.

Mr. Rafi said that Mr. Jeyavel had trespassed into the Corporation office and taken away 17 files pertaining to building plan approval, new drinking water connections and underground drainage connections. Mr Jayavel had abused a woman staff member claiming that the employees dared to process the applications submitted to them “without the seal” of the Zonal Chairperson.

“This is not the first time he has been doing this. He had done this four times earlier. But, now he has threatened our colleague. We need security to carry out our work,” he told the Mayor after having met the Deputy Commissioner, V. Sambhavi.

Oral instruction

In the recently held council meeting, Mr. Jeyavel had complained that the Deputy Commissioner had given oral instruction to the corporation officials and employees not to allow the elected representatives to go through the applications received by the corporation.

Employees said that the zonal chairperson insisted that only those files that were “wetted” by him by way of a seal should be processed, which is against the Corporation rules.

Mr. Rafi alleged that Mr. Jeyavel had threatened the employees claiming that the Deputy Commissioner would be in the office for three months whereas he would in the Corporation for the next four years. The Commissioner also said that he has ordered an enquiry into the complaint given by an Assistant Commissioner.

Meanwhile, the employees staged a demonstration on the Corporation premises demanding security for the employees. A similar complaint of high-handedness was made against another zonal chairperson in May.
