Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Tirumavalavan demanded that India should push for an independent international probe into the genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Addressing a protest meeting organised by the party here on Monday, Mr. Tirumavalavan said that 1.5 lakh Tamils were massacred in the island nation. “It was important that the accused in the killing of Tamils should be booked and punished by the International Court,” he said.
Stating that the Tamil diaspora was pressing for this demand, Mr. Tirumavalvan pointed to the resolution passed to this effect by the Tamil Nadu Assembly. He wanted the Centre to take a cue from the Assembly resolution and push for an international probe.
Even five years after the war was over, Tamils in Sri Lanka had not got protection. Their farms and houses were taken over by the Singhalese military and Tamils were made to suffer, he said.
He wondered why the US, China and the United Nations remained mute spectators when innocent people were massacred in Sri Lanka.
Stating that Dravidian leader C.N. Annadurai had adopted total prohibition policy in the past, he wondered why the present government that was following his principles not implementing it.
The tortures of Dalits in the name of caste in the past had led to people converting into other religions, he complained.
He said that the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi and the Left parties had formed an alliance on principles and not with an eye on the ensuing election.
He urged his party men to shun Tasmac shops and also campaign against liquor to protect people in villages, he said.
