The Madras High Court Bench here on Tuesday directed the Karur district administration to prevent the practice of devotees of a local temple rolling on plantain leaves thrown away by those belonging to a particular caste group after taking meals on them.

Shocked over the practice being followed at Nerur Sathasiva Brahmendiral Temple, a Division Bench of Justices S. Manikumar and G. Chockalingam ordered a Special Government Pleader to communicate the order at the earliest and make sure that such an event did not take place.

The order was passed on a public interest litigation petition filed by V. Dalit Pandiyan, a resident of Karur, alleging that the practice was part of caste discrimination.

However, the government counsel refuted the allegation and said that all devotees, irrespective of their caste, rolled on the used leaves.
