Desilting work of a canal through which water from Mullaperiyar Dam is released to Tamil Nadu began on Monday, officials said.

Desilting would be carried out from the lake adjacent to the dam in Idduki District of Kerala to the shutters where water was being released to Tamil Nadu, officials said.

The desilting work of ‘Yanai Vaikal’ was being done with the permission of the Supreme Court and in the presence of central hydro electric power research commission officials.

The PWD officials from both the riparian states would also be present during the work, officials said.
