Tirunelveli, Tuticorin districts cross collection targets set
Collector R. Selvaraj formally commenced the Flag Day fund collection by offering his contribution to the fund for the welfare of ex-servicemen.
According to Dr. Selvaraj, the district administration which has distributed identity cards to 6,780 ex-servicemen and 2,867 widows, has ensured a Flag Day fund collection of Rs. 36.89 lakh till December 6 this year against the target of Rs. 24.80 lakh.
During the one year period between December 7, 2011 and December 6, 2012, 665 ex-servicemen and their families had received assistance to the tune of Rs. 65.74 lakh.
A total of 26 children of ex-servicemen had received educational assistance to the tune of Rs. 4.58 lakh.
Of the seven widows’ cases recommended for receiving family pension, three have already started getting the assistance.
While four ex-servicemen have been appointed in the government departments, 271 others have been placed in various firms through their organisation, TEXCO.
Five ex-servicemen, who were trained by the police, have been selected for the posts of Grade II Constable, Dr. Selvaraj said.
For the year 2012, the district has been given Flag Day fund target of Rs. 26.96 lakh.
Collector Ashish Kumar inaugurated the Armed Forces Flag Day programme here on Friday.
One minute silence was observed in memory of soldiers, who lost their lives in the battlefield.
Mr. Kumar inaugurated the Flag Day fund contribution. Tuticorin district has surpassed the target of Flag Day contribution set for 2011 with a collection of Rs. 62, 47, 519.
A target of Rs. 22, 18, 700 was fixed. For 2012, a target of Rs. 24,41,000 was set, according to a statement issued here.
