The Madurai district unit of Hindu Temple Protection Committee launched a campaign here on Friday in protest against collection of fee for darshan in temples.

Launching the campaign, P. Sundaravadivel, State general secretary, said that the practice of collecting darshan fee was discriminatory, especially in Madurai where A. Vaidyanatha Iyer led a team of Dalits and Nadars into the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple on July 8, 1939, emphasising the right to worship for all.

Meet on July 28

He said that the State office-bearers of Hindu Temple Protection Committee would meet on July 28 to decide on extending the campaign all over the State. Similar campaign would be conducted at block-level in Madurai district soon, he said.

The campaign was led by L. Amuthan, president of the district unit.
