Valuables and cash stolen during a burglary in the city a month ago have been recovered and the thieves arrested.
The city police on Thursday recovered 2.750 kg of gold and Rs. 25 lakh in currency burgled from the residence of a bullion merchant in Anna Nagar last month. His driver and two accomplices were arrested.
The police said the valuables were stored in a cupboard on the first floor of Suriyanarayanan’s house in Kuruvikaran Salai.They were reported missing on June 14. The theft occurred while the family lay asleep on the ground floor. The police suspected his driver, P. Selvaraj of Ayyappanaickkenpatti near Sholavandan. During interrogation, Selvaraj is said to have confessed to the burglary and the involvement of his friends C. Ganesan and P. Pandiarajan.
"At least a week before the burglary, they cut the iron grill fence around the house and waited for the right opportunity. Selvaraj was aware of the presence of gold in the house. At around 2 a.m. they gained entry into the house by cutting the bars of a window. They found the keys to the cupboard and made off with the loot,” B. Murugadossan, Inspector of Police, said.
