The city police are on the lookout for gangsters involved in ‘katta panchayat’ (kangaroo court) and ganja peddling and some politically connected persons in connection with the recovery of 11 country-made bombs from a garbage bin at Anna Nagar here on Monday evening.

The immediate concern of the police is to recover nine more bombs from the suspect, who had reportedly dumped the 11 bombs in the bin.

“One of four gangsters who were arrested by the police in Chennai last week had reportedly confessed to have given 20 country-made bombs to his accomplice in Madurai. We have recovered 11 of them. We now want to recover the remaining ones,” a police officer involved in the hunt for the rowdy elements said.

The bombs were meant for a history-sheeter from Varichiyur, who is said to be absconding. He wanted to bump off an “irritating” rowdy element.

Special teams formed by Madurai Commissioner of Police Sanjay Mathur are on the lookout for different persons in the city and in Madurai rural area.

The officer said two of the bombs that were packed with white threads looked similar to those recovered by the police from ganja pedlars at Sourashtrapuram on two occasions.

Madurai rural police had recovered two country-made bombs from the scene where a bloody gang war resulted in double murder at Sourashtrapuram near Vandiyur in January 2014.

Last moth, the district police recovered a country-made bomb while they went on a ganja raid near the same spot.

The police said the apprehended gangsters belonged to ‘Appala’ Raja group.

CCTV footage

The city police have got video footage of the traffic movement on First East Main Road in Anna Nagar, where the bombs were found. The police are trying to identify the person or the gang who had left the bag containing the bombs in the bin.

Anna Nagar police have registered a case under the provisions of the Explosives Substances Act.
