Anshul Mishra on Monday took charge as the new Collector of Madurai district from his predecessor U. Sagayam who has been posted as Special Officer and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers' Cooperative Societies (Co-optex)
An IAS officer of the 2004 batch, Mr. Mishra was earlier the Collector of Tiruvannamalai where he unravelled an “organised” copying in the SSLC public examination in a private matriculation school earlier this year. He was also the Commissioner of Coimbatore Corporation during the World Tamil Conference.
He had already worked in Madurai as the Additional Collector (Development) during 2007-08 when he headed the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA).
Model City
Addressing a press conference after taking charge, he said that his priority would be providing “free, fair and transparent administration” with emphasis on effective implementation of the State Government's welfare schemes to make Madurai a ‘model city.'
He said that the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, whom he had met before taking charge, had instructed him to give importance to certain sensitive issues in Madurai.
While assuring of strong action against encroachment of land for commercial purposes or non-residential encroachments that cause problems to the people, he said that residential encroachments would have to be addressed by either granting pattas to the poor people or through some other suitable remedy.
In dealing with dengue outbreak in southern districts, he said that emphasis would be on intensifying fogging operations and preventing breeding of mosquitoes.
Mr. Mishra said that strict legal action would be taken against those transgressing the law. He also termed as vital, coordination with other departments such as the Corporation and police.
Besides promising to be accessible to the people in person or through the mobile phone, he said that focus would be on prompt grievance redressal. All the good projects undertaken by his predecessor would be continued, he added.
