In a bizarre incident, K. R. Bakkiyam, Additional District Public Prosecutor drowned, when he and his advocate friend, returning home in a two-wheeler fell into a roadside well at Samiyarpatti Vilakku Road, near here on Tuesday night.

Police said Mr. Bakkiyam, brother of former AIADMK MLA K. R. Muruganandam (Sivaganga) was returning after attending a village festival at Sundaranadappu with his friend Muthukumar in a two-wheeler around 9 p.m., when they fell into the roadside well.

Muthukumar, who was riding the bike, believed to be in an inebriated condition, had lost control, police said. The well had a parapet wall and the advocates fell into the well after crashing against the wall, police added.

After falling into the 50-foot-deep well, which had water upto 30 feet, along with the bike, Muthukumar managed to get hold of a hose pipe in the well, while Mr. Bakkiyam drowned with the vehicle. As he could not climb up, Muthukumar kept shouting for help for nearly three hours, when a passerby alerted the police. Later, the fire services personnel rescued and admitted him to the hospital. After a nearly six-hour-long operation, the firemen fished out the body of Mr. Bakkiyam and the motorbike, police said.
